The Alliance for Responsible Mining

Was established in 2004 and is a leading global expert on artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM). We work to transform the ASM sector into a socially and environmentally responsible activity, while improving the quality of life of artisanal miners, their families and communities.

Mission

We facilitate the empowerment of artisanal and small-scale miners, their organization and the adoption of good practices, promoting favorable environments for the inclusion of artisanal and small-scale miners in the formal economy. We create voluntary standard systems for production and trade and support the creation of responsible supply chains.

Vision

A legitimate, responsible and profitable artisanal and small-scale mining sector which promotes inclusive and sustainable development.

CRAFT and Fairmined model

We work using the CRAFT & Fairmined model as we truly believe this to be the way to meet our four main strategies, which will lead to create positive changes and achieve constant, progressive and realistic improvements in the sector.

1 | Assisting miners on the ground

We support groups of miners on their path towards sustainability, prioritizing the continuity of projects in territories.

2 | We develop standards and certification systems

We develop and implement sustainability standards tailored to the realities of the sector.

3 | We work for responsible gold supply chains and market development

We facilitate efficient and responsible supply chains from artisanal and small-scale mining.

4 | Governance for sustainable artisanal and small-scale mining

We foster the positioning of responsible artisanal and small-scale mining as a legitimate actor and promote bottom-up decision-making.

Manifiesto

In 2019, the entire team worked collaboratively together, through reflection and art, to create the ARM Manifesto that reflects what we do, how we feel about working in the organization and how our organizational culture exists today.

Our team

The entire team of the Alliance for Responsible Mining wants to thank miners, allies, donors and everyone who has worked on the creation of responsible supply chains for having worked together to improve the artisanal and small-scale mining sector.

Marco Lügstenmann

Governance Team

Marco volunteered at ARM between February and May 2019. He supported the collection, systematization and analysis of information on regulations and public policies to provide tools and updated information to the governance team, particularly related to the strategy to identify barriers and their incidence. He worked on the regulatory analysis of mining coexistence in Burkina Faso, Ghana, the Philippines, Nicaragua, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. He also searched for successful cases of mining coexistence in Venezuela, Ghana, Mali and Mongolia. We are grateful for his dedication and contribution to the governance team. It is very valuable to have people like him, with all his knowledge and ideas, who contribute to strengthening the foundation’s knowledge and human capital.
